Elegant and whimsical, designed as if it were meant for a fairytale Princess, my masquerade mask sat looming in its silver velvet box. My heart skipped a beat as I knelt down, my fingertips edging the cold shimmering silver bathed in antiquity; I pulled the mask out and let the haunting beauty lay in the cup of my palms. Here was my mystique, with eloquent pearls nestled inside flowers.
Holding the mask, I stalked over to the achingly ornate closet of charmingly timeless fairy dust coated gowns. I peered inside, inhaling the rose petal scent of lingering fallen flowers in a fresh spring meadow. I wondered who the scent belonged to; as my fingers grazed the gowns that brushed past my flesh and my stomach did a summersault as my eyes fell on a ball dress that set my heartbeats pounding in time, a distant drum roll. I felt as if I had seen this dress before. An old memory shot through me as my fingers graced the soft fabric. I faintly heard the rumbling of waves, the scent of fresh and free salt covering the horizon of the world. The clock striking, a fairytale ending when forgotten words whispered, “I love you. This is our last moment in time, so just take my hand, girl.” My hands snapped away from the fabric as if my flesh had been burnt by menacing flames. Here I stood, with the enchanting and secretive gown with a beautiful and haunting mask in my hands, unlocking my mystique. Michael’s midnight mystery was still elusive. I wondered silently if I would ever solve that mystery.

Chapter 21: The Day the World Heard the Same Melody
I bit my bottom lip as my eyes met with the twinkle of the stars outside the window in brass framing. Something about their perpetual dance in the heavens told me not to fear. Golden and bright, shining and light, my gaze fell on Planet Venus lingering in a blend of soft modesty and dazzling majesties and I found myself remembering the nights I had caught her flickering her love and beauty in the star studded skies, from an era of the millennium. Venus and her stars whispered for me to once again press my hands against the shimmering dress. The beauty, the faint memories and the words that had brushed within me, embedded within an aura of a dazzling dream dress, a gown that shot labouring breaths through my lungs, overwhelmed my heart. Taking a deep breath, I slipped my hands within, eased the gown out and struggled with the buttons on the velvet dress draped upon my body. I fell out of it, threw it carelessly on the four poster bed and walked over to the elaborate mirror as I stepped into the dress. It felt like I was wearing a cloud as I wandered into the bathroom, strummed a silver hairbrush through my long strands of hair, I dipped my face in the basin and felt droplets of water seep into my skin. Emerging from the basin, I stood in front of my reflection and let my eyes wander over the soft white dress that sloped and hugged my body like magical wrapping on an eternal and never-ending hourglass. Bunched gossamer material clung against my collarbone, etching into the chest bodice that was grazed in fine glimmering pink flowered jewels, curving and connected by silver stems. Four blush pink lines stood vertically against the chest, and just like the princess tales, soft and dreamy was the waistline, ballooning outwards entrancingly. Silky and white like the snowy mountaintops in winter, the pink jewelled flowers with silver stems skirted the hem. The candlelight’s flickering in the bathroom diverted my gaze to strange colours streaming within the shadows. I loomed closer, picking up what showed itself as a small perfume bottle decorated with silver minuscule horses strutting over the rim, sculpted in a prism, rainbow light dancing on its surface. I dabbed a droplet on the pulse at my neck. It smelt like Indian roses twirled with orange blossoms, seeped in white tree scents twisting in amber and musk. The intoxication of the fragrance sent a jolt of dreamy mysterious fascination through my veins. I stared one last time at the woman in the mirror, before putting the enchanting mask crawling in silver flower jewels and auramarine stones against my face, hiding myself and seeing only a girl lingering in a time long ago, far away. She was both locked and set free inside a tale of magic. I stalked out of the bathroom with thoughts of Michael looking at the man in the mirror for the last time before he flung his mask on, and I wondered so curiously how he was dressed, who he had become, the fragment of his soul laced in the classic world. A world where every lady was every mans princess. My heart hammered in anticipation as the blood raced through my veins in a thrill when I flung the closet door open once more looking for shoes to slip on. Stinging tears were threatening to spill past my eyes as I bent down and inspected a pair of glass slippers. Was I in a dream or was this world a fantasy of love and spellbinding enchantress? I stared dazed at the implanted crystals and a single ruby fallen into the artwork creation of each shoe. My head spun dizzily as I slipped my feet into the soft shoes and a million and one thoughts danced inside my mind as I opened the door and froze to blow out the candles hovering before me at the wall. The room clouded over in the deep darkness of the jet black midnight skies. I walked briskly through the handsome corridors with my hand slipping across the polished banister of the dipping staircase, passing the seashore painting of Michael and me until I arrived at the empty foyer. Craning my head into the corridor that Mr.Thomas had previously shown us, I saw stacks of men and women with beautiful, mesmerising and outrageous masks making their way up the steps, into the ballroom. I stood there alone for a moment in silence, biting my lip and knowing there were two ways I could go. They were waiting for us…and so was Jeffery. My heartbeat thumped in terror as I ran off in the opposite direction, past the tunnel corridor of glass windows shining in reflected stars until the stones of the outside gravel crunched under my otherworldly shoes. Blanketed in darkness, how would I find the bell tower? “Luuuucy! Oh, Miss.Luuuucy, over here!” Jeffrey’s voice hooted like a secret owl in the night. Relief flew through me as I followed the voice to the opposite limestone wall, making my way up clanking wooden steps that seemed everlasting as I climbed breathless. In the dead of the darkness, I saw the outline of Jeffery and a stranger. “H-hello, Jeffrey. What…what did you want to meet me here for?” I asked, turning my gaze to the shining light of the full moon that bathed me in its glow. The figure beside Jeffrey shifted slightly, and I wished they would step out from behind the shadows and come closer to me and a gasp flew from my mouth. She was clad in a golden gown that flittered and hung perfectly. She looked beautiful enough to paint and keep in forever’s suitcase of memories. “Lucy, it’s me. Mary. I didn’t have the courage to…to just run away and become a world renowned pianist like you said I should, until…until…well, I spoke to Jeffrey and he…” Mary trailed off and I saw her feet etching closer to me until she fell into the moonlight, inches from my face. A lavender scent echoing with peaches swarmed from her skin as I looked into her warm brown eyes fluttered dark thick eyelashes; I couldn’t help as a smile found my face. “Mary, you decided to come to the ball? That’s great. You look beautiful. Who are you going with, then? And you’re gonna run away from the clutches of Mr.Thomas after tonight and be that pianist people pay to see?” I asked, grinning broadly, as she flew closer and wrapped me up in a tight hug. “Oh Lucy, how can I ever thank you for helping me a way into a different life? I’m going on the piano tonight to play for everyone, with the violinists! Mr.Thomas is expecting that batty old Mrs.Dale, but Miss Jolene and Jeffrey gave her a sedative and now she’s fast asleep and isn’t going anywhere…hahaha.” Mary broke off to stare at Jeffrey, who stepped out of the shadows and I found his goofily grinning face. The moment I took in his appearance, I felt pleasant shock and glee sing in my heart. He was clad in black pants and heeled boots with a floaty white shirt blazed in what looked like shinning onyx stones. A smart navy velvet coat with gold trimmings fitted his torso. “Oh, we just barred the windows, left a note saying the ball had been moved to another date, and locked the door. We put her cat Henry with her for company, and food and water, of course.” Jeffrey said, looking pleased with himself. The moonlight bathed in the smiling depths of Jeffery’s eyes. “That sounds wonderful. Well come on you two, you are coming, aren’t you?” I asked, edging away to the topmost step, touching upon the warm wood of the tower with my hand as I glanced over my shoulder at Mary and Jeffery. Two sunny smiles beamed back at me and whisked as quick as foxes to my side, slipping daintily down the steps and along the winding path, feeling the cold night air brush against our skin.
